On August 21, 2023, the Alamance NAACP and the Alamance Burlington Association of Educators (ABAE) urged the County Commissioners to pass the below resolution during their regularly scheduled meeting. The main points are;
- NC is 46th in the nation for new teacher pay. This hinders the states's ability to attract quality future educators to the field. The resolution urges the general assembly to increase educator pay across the board.
- 80% of NC families report major difficulty in finding and paying for childcare. The resolution urges the general assembly to expand access to early childhood education
- The general assembly is proposing lifting the income cap on the "Opportunity Scholarship." This would allow for more public dollars to be diverted from the budget for public schools to fund private schools. If the income cap is lifted, this would allow millionaires to use state money to send their children to private schools. This program is problematic to begin with, as private schools face none of the scrutiny, restrictions, or oversight requirements of public schools.
